Best practice is for college-bound seniors take the SAT and/or the ACT during the Spring of their Junior year. If necessary, students should plan on taking one or both tests again as soon as possible during the Senior year to improve scores for college admission applications.
Students do take the ACT during their junior year at SCHS for FREE. It is important that Juniors take full advantage of this opportunity and do their best on this test as these scores can be used for college applications during their Senior year. SCHS does not offer a fee waiver for college applications; however, college application fee waivers are available through CollegeFoundation (SAT) for qualifying students.
Student who receive free/reduced lunch are eligible to receive fee waivers for SAT tests, ACT tests, and college applications. In order to get access to these waivers, students will need to see the cafeteria manager for verification of their lunch status and bring this information to Mrs. Williams in student services to get a fee waiver. Higher education planning should be done based on the specific needs and goals of the individual student. Some students find it beneficial to stay local to attend for the first 2 years for a variety of reasons (finances, not being sure of career path, family obligations, etc...). Other students, are eager to start their collegiate journey away from home. The best thing to do is to consider the pros and cons of each option and do what is the best interest of the student.
The UNC System schools only require 3 sciences for admission to UNC System college/university; however, some pre-declaration programs, may require credits outside of the UNC general admission requirements. Private and out-of-state colleges/universities may have requirements that differ from the UNC general admission requirements. Seniors should visit the websites of schools they are interested in attending to see school/major specific admissions requirements.
